During
the first snowfalls of winter, children as well as adults look forward
to the outdoor recreation that snow offers. Young children eagerly
prepare their sleds, snowboards or other snow eqipment, and parents
double check last year's winter garb to make sure it all fits and
is sufficient for this year's temperatures.
Safety precautions should also be reviewed during the winter season.
Keep in mind the ages of your children, and the activity levels
appropriate for them. It is important to consider what is a safe
age for kids to start sledding, because from the time of infacy
babies love to imitate their elders. Thus, young toddlers will probably
be eager to join the older kids on the sledding hills and slopes.
And this desire can be satisfied for the most part, with baby pull
sleds and other safe contraptions that parents can use to help their
babies feel involved in all the winter fun!
But, essentially, for children to start sledding down steep inclines
on their own, they should be at least four years of age. At this
point, most young children have reached the physical and mental
maturity to make small decisions on their own, especially with simple
activities like sledding. But, this age is of course only appropriate
if there are adults present. Always provide parental supervision
for your children while they sled, no matter what the age. In fact,
join in the fun! It is hard not to, especially since standing still
in freeizing temperatures is much less enjoyable than moving and
being active! Enjoy the adrenaline rush, and keep an eye out for
safety as the neighborhood kids whoosh down those hills.
Along with what is a safe age for kids to start sledding, it is
also worthwhile to survey the landscape on which you will be sledding.
Smaller children have less ability to control or steer their sleds,
so avoid hills with trees, fences or other obstructions at the bottom.
